Eco Club Formation in Schools of Bajhang and Bajura

The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) is working in Bajhang and Bajura districts for the L-EVO project. The formation of eco clubs in schools is one of the key activities of the project in order to capacitate and enhance the understanding of students and their families about the environment and its protection, climate change, disaster risks and management.

The project team has successfully formed five eco clubs (2 in Bajhang and 3 in Bajura).

Bajhang: Sunkuda Secondary School, Sunkuda, and Deveswori Secondary School, Deulekh both in Bitthadchir Rural Municipality and

Bajura: Saraswoti Secondary School, Khaptad Chhedadaha Rural Municipality, Thuma Secondary School, and Pashupati Secondary School, Budhiganga Municipality.

Mr. Basant Pratap Singh and Mr. Mohan Raj Jaishi, field assistants for Bajhang and Bajura respectively led the formation of eco clubs. Formation of the eco clubs followed communication and discussion meetings with the School Principals, where both explained the L-EVO project, eco club and its importance, project activities, responsibilities, and guidelines for formation prepared by SEN.

As mentioned in the guideline for eco club formation, students from Grades 6 to 9 were involved in the executive committees.

In Bajhang, the eco clubs were formed with 27 and 21 members in executive committees of Sunkuda and Deveswori Secondary Schools respectively. The committees consisted of 41% and 48% girl students in Sunkuda and Deveswori Secondary Schools respectively. The eco clubs were named Laligurans and Deveswori by the executive committees.

In Bajura, the executive committees were formed with 9 students including 1 Guardian Teacher in all three eco clubs. Overall those committees consist of 45% girl students. And the general members in each school were 32, 37, and 36 respectively including executive committees.

In all five schools, the school Principals are designated as Guardians and Science Teachers as Coordinators of the eco clubs. The Principals of both schools have committed to conducting regular meetings and organizing awareness-raising programs every month.
