Adaptation for Climate Change by Livestock Smallholders in Gandaki River Basin

The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) is undertaking a 3 years research project entitled “Adaptation for Climate Change by Livestock Smallholders in Gandaki River Basin” with a joint collaboration of the City University of New York (CUNY) and Colorado State University (CSU) and funded by the USAID Livestock-Climate Change Collaborative Research Support Program (LCC-CRSP). The project is being carried out under the close coordination with Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) and Department of Livestock Services (DoLS), Government of Nepal, Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) and Tribhuvan University (TU) from Nepal.

Major objective of the project is to analyze local and regional climate change and focus on the frequency of hydro-meteorological extremes over the past few decades to gauge the impact of climate change on smallholders’ livestock health and productivity. This project will downscale climate variability over the Gandaki River Basin to much higher resolution (1-10 km) than has been done until now. The results of this analysis will provide a better understanding of how climate change is impacting the economies and ecosystems that are essential to the livelihood of livestock keepers in Nepal.
