Talk Program on Modeling and Remote Sensing of Himalayan Hydrology under Changing Global Environment

On 17 June 2022, The Small Earth Nepal and Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, TU jointly conducted a talk program by Dr. Yadu Pokhrel from Michigan State University, USA. Dr. Pokhrel presented on recent advances in hydrological modeling and remote sensing.

Dr. Pokhrel also shared his studies in the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia and the Amazon River in South America using satellite and in situ data. The study focused on the sustainability of water resources and agricultural systems under climate change and growing influence from water management to meet rising food-energy-water demands. He gave examples on how process-based modeling and management of parameters can help modeling for low flow conditions. He encouraged the use of SMAP and GRACE satellites for accurate model preparation while also providing information that the newly launched SWOT satellite can help in hydrological modeling.

Dr. Pokhrel’s research focuses on improving the understanding of the changes in global/regional water cycle in response to the combined effects of human activities and climate change. They include the changes in various components of the hydrological cycle, as caused directly by human activities such as reservoir operation, land use change, irrigation, and groundwater pumping.
