The Small Earth Nepal (SEN) with the support of WWF Nepal organized one day programme entitled \u201cStudents\u2019 Meet on Climate Change ” on the occasion of the World Environment Day (WED) on Sunday, 5 June 2011 at Nepal Administrative Staff College, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur. This year the day was celebrated with the theme \u201cForests: Nature at Your Service\u201d that coincides with the UN International Year of Forests 2011 to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.<\/p>\n

Each year on 5th June, the World Environment Day is celebrated globally as an annual event. The WED celebration began in 1973 and is being celebrated each year, sensitizing people on the present day situation of their environment, bringing government and stakeholders in the same platform to design and implement various actions to conserve the\u00a0\u00a0 environment. Through the WED, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development. The WED is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.<\/p>\n

The orientation classes for the students were conducted by Ms. Nisha Amatya, Program Assistant, SEN to motivate 38 students and teachers to participate in the program with different presentations and other activities. The day long program in the WED capacitated about 100 students and 15 teachers from 14 schools of the Kathmandu valley in different aspects of Climate Change. The program was coordinated by Mr. Sudarshan Rajbhandari, Vice-President, SEN.\u00a0 The entire program was conducted by the participating students with the facilitation of the organizers. Altogether 11 papers that includes seven from the school students, one from a school teacher and the remaining three from the expert group were presented. All the papers were presented in different aspect of the Climate Change.<\/p>\n

Among the student\u2019s presentations, Mr. Samrat Prasai from Occidental Public School and Mr. Krishna Rauniyar and Ms. Kenny Dangol from Bhanu Bhakta Memorial Higher Secondary School presented on topic “How the climate is changing?\u201d. Similarly, Mr. Dharma Raj Ojha and Mr. Jayan Ranjit from Shree Kumari School presented paper on “Can We reduces Changing Climate? Mitigation\u201d. The topic of “We Can Reduce the Impacts: Adaptation Basis” was covered by students from Pacific Academy namely Mr. Deuraj Uprety and Mr. Ayush Karmacharya. From Little Angels’ School\u00a0 Ms. Ashryata Manandhar presented her paper on the topic “National and International Response to Climate Change “.Mr. Raghav Poddar and Ms. Neha Rajbhandari from Rato Bangla School presented a paper on \u201cClimate Change: No More Silence”. Similarly from Aarsha Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School, Ms. Ichhaya Acharya and Mr. Rabin Aryal presented their paper on “Students’ Role for Conserving the Mother Earth”. Lastly Mr. Ganesh Singh Dhami, Environment Population and Health teacher of Aarsha Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School presented the paper on “Climate Change: Motivating Ambassadors”.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, students recited three poems related to climate change namely Mr. Sabrin Gautam and Mr. Kishor Adhikari, from Bhanubhakta Memorial Higher Secondary School and Mr. Anga Mahatara from Little Angels’ School. Similarly, two dramas were performed by the students of Asphodel Public School and Nagarjun Valley Academy.
\nMr. Bhawani Shankar Dongol, Senior Program Officer-Fresh Water, WWF Nepal presented on topic “Impacts of Climate Change”.<\/p>\n

Mr. Jeeban Panthi from The Small Earth Nepal presented his paper on topic the “School Students and Changing Climate (S2C2). During the program the contents of the book \u201cPani Prasad Ventures to Raise Climate Change Awareness\u201d, the third series of Pani Prasad related to climate change adaptation focusing to school students of Nepal was shared by Mr. Piyush Dahal and and Mr. Niranjan Bista conducted quiz related to Pani prasad.<\/p>\n

The program was wrapped up with the distribution of certificate and token of love to participants and schools followed by a documentary show entitled \u201cCombating Climate Change in Gokyo\u201d produced by WWF.<\/p>\n
