Call for application on “Second Graduate Course on Hydrogeology”

Capacity building of graduate students and early career professionals is one of the key initiatives of the Small Earth Nepal (SEN) since its establishment. SEN annually provides different training, scholarships, and internships to graduates students. The main objective of this initiative is to address knowledge gaps among graduates in the recent development of science, technology, and tools. As a part of this initiative, SEN in collaboration with the Fulbright Specialist Program, Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), University of Rhode Island (URI), USA,  Tribhuvan University Alumni Association Nepal (TUAAN) and Centre for Hydrology of University of Saskatchewan is organizing the Second Graduate Course on Hydrogeology in Kathmandu from 12 August to 16 August 2019.

A key focus of the graduate course is to provide training on basic and applied aspects of hydrogeology to early-career professionals, recent graduates, and water managers in the research and policy communities. The course will cover basic hydrogeological concepts, including familiarization of the audience with water quality issues, groundwater hydraulics and modeling, aquifer safe yield and sustainability considerations, as well as water management and water resources protection approaches. The course will be mix of lectures, hands-on exercises, discussion sessions, students’ presentations, and a field trip.

Lead instructor of the course will be Professor Thomas Boving from URI. He is a hydrogeologist and his works focus on (1) innovative remediation technologies for soil and groundwater, (2) stormwater runoff quality and treatment, and (3) water quality and supply solutions for communities in developing countries. Dr. Boving has supervised several field projects involving installation of riverbank filtration (RBF) wells, interpretation aquifer test data, and excavation of contaminated soil and underground storage tanks. He served as an expert witness in legal cases concerning surface and groundwater contamination.
